Chimney Safety

As fall approaches and temperatures begin to drop, many Oregonians will start using fireplaces and wood stoves to stay warm. Over the past four years, fire departments across Oregon have responded to 1,603 chimney fires. These incidents pose serious risks to lives and property—but they are largely preventable.
To help keep you and your family safe this season, here are some important chimney safety tips:
· Have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a certified professional.
· Burn only dry, seasoned wood to reduce creosote buildup.
· Never burn trash, cardboard, or treated wood in your fireplace or stove.
· Install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
· Use a fireplace screen to prevent embers from escaping into the room.
· Ensure proper ventilation to avoid buildup of dangerous gases.
By taking these simple precautions, you can enjoy a warm, cozy fire while minimizing the risk of chimney fires.
